FAQ

This FAQ is drawn from the questions made to our ITS Helpdesk. If you have a question that is not listed here, please email the ITS Help Desk.

• What is Vista?

Vista is the new Windows operating system that will replace Windows XP.

•  Is Windows Vista more secure than XP?

Windows Vista informs the user of security and privacy issues so the user can make an informed decision, depending on the course of action.

•  Should I wait to puchase a new PC?

No, feel free to purchase a computer at any time.  Both Dell and Lenovo are offering "express upgrades" to users who purchase new computers.  Make sure your new computer has a "Windows Vista Capable" sticker, or is listed on the manufacturer's website as a "Windows Vista Capable".

•  When will Windows Vista be available to as a licensed version at the Computer Store?

Currently it is available for departmental purchase in the Business and Enterprise editions.  A late spring date is the target for students looking to make the upgrade.  No information is available at this time for the student version that will be sold.

•  Whats the difference between a "Windows Vista Capable" and a "Windows Vista Premium Ready" PC?

A new PC that carries the "Windows Vista Capable PC" logo can run Windows Vista. All editions of Windows Vista will deliver core experiences such as innovations in organizing and finding information, security, and reliability. All Windows Vista Capable PCs will run these core experiences at a minimum. Some features available in the premium editions of Windows Vista-like the new Windows Aero user experience-may require advanced or additional hardware.  Machines that meet the requirements for Windows Aero will have a "Windows Vista Premium Ready" sticker.

•  So what software works and what doesn't?

The Vista task force has an constantly updating list of software that Penn State University regularly uses and its current state on the operating system.

•  Who do I speak to if I have more questions or want to see it in action?

The Penn State Computer Store has the operating system on display and can answer most of your questions. Contact the Computer Store at (814) 865-2100 or 800-25-9281 or by visiting them in room 12 Willard
